Saving Lives
Written by Jarod on January 26th, 2010So many organizations are relying on us for supplies now, and they all say the same thing: “You are saving lives.” It’s very humbling and encouraging. It’s growing like crazy. We’ve supplied Haiti with about 8000 gallons of fuel, several tons of rice and beans, and thousands of dollars worth of drinking water. We’ve purchased a number of other items, too. I wonder what the Dominicans think when they see me pushing a cart full of feminine hygiene products…
For us to spend $10,000 in one day is not at all unusual. It’s gotten to the point where we just can’t get enough vehicles going at the same time to deliver everything that needs to go down south. It’s much easier to supply the northeast, of course, but the needs are far greater down south.
We have some possible relief coming in the form of the US Army. They are sending a representative here tomorrow to help us negotiate with the Santiago airport to set up a small helicopter base. I do not have all of the details yet, but they would basically give us the containers we need, we’d fill them up with the food, meds, and fuel items demanded by the different operations meeting the needs in Port, and they would carry them west to Haiti daily. We’d have people on the receiving end to help with distribution. This would alleviate the dangers we face on the roads and eliminate the delays we experience due to availability of vehicles. Pray like crazy that this could happen, because it would make a huge difference.
