Getting Ready for Port

Written by Jarod on January 27th, 2010

Today, I took Chad, who is going to be taking over all operations on our end, over to Jarabacoa to get his signature on the checking account and have him meet Vic Trautwine.  I got to see Jeff Vandermolen, as well, so now he knows all of my Kids Alive contacts who have played a part in helping us clear funds for all of these large orders.  Basically, it seems that I am working myself out of a job, which is great.  We have a very competent team on the ground, so I can start thinking about other things.

Tomorrow, Al Lackey, the president of Kids Alive gets here.  On Friday, he’s planning on going with Jeff Vandermolen to Cap Haitien, and I am going to jump on the bus with them with some supplies I will need.  The plan is for me to go to Port-au-Prince and try to get in touch with representatives from Save the Children and/or UNICEF in order to put papers in their hands showing Kids Alive’s credentials, the government approvals we have in the Dominican Republic, and our plan for housing children temporarily both in the north of Haiti and in the Dominican Republic.  If I can get some good contacts and get everything lined up, I may be coming back to the Dominican Republic with orphaned and displaced children.  If not, at least I hope to get the ball rolling to that end.

So, Friday I go to Cap.  Saturday, I get my brake pads changed and do maintenance on my car and generator, and then Sunday morning I leave for Port before sunrise, hopefully to arrive in Titanyen at 8:00AM or so.  Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, I help on the receiving end of the supply line we’ve established and make forays into Port to try to contact those organizations.
